The Design Life, Cecil Collins
Cecil Collins is best known as a painter and has established its reputation in the 1930 able to be included in the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936 in London at the invitation of the eminent art critic Herbert Read. Surrealist influence can certainly be seen as an early work of Cecil Collins’, but in later years has developed its own visual language based on the iconic archetypes Fool and the Angel. Unreservedly the spiritual content of his later revealed the true nature of a man so deeply spiritual, whose beliefs and principles fundamentally incompatible with the atheistic existentialism and surrealism.
Cecil Collins is now considered visionary artist or metaphysical, and some historians have described as the most important visionary artist William Blake. However, for me, and I think many other artists, his biggest influence was a teacher, in particular the methods of life drawing classes, which I describe in my book archetypal postures, and the process of creativity. When I started classes in 1979, one was still a reasonable prospect of a course, but in 1985 he had become so popular with students, who had to queue all night during the reference week.
The students were themselves evidence of its value as a teacher, among which eventually became almost a cult figure. Through his teaching was able to show how artists of “losing control”, through the design of life. Of course, this sounds absurd, if not impossible, but when they occurred, will be less. We spend our lives trying to take over, to let things get out of control. The idea of ??giving up control seems to be the height of folly, but the “Fool” was one of Cecil Collins, the most significant icons.
